Area Converter

Convert land and floor areas between metric and imperial units.

Convert areas between square meters, square feet, acres, and hectares. Handy for real estate listings, land measurement, farming, and construction — with exact factors for every unit.

Introduction

Area units square the complexity of length conversion — literally. Every linear factor gets squared, so converting square feet to square meters uses 0.09290304 (which is 0.3048 squared), not 0.3048. Forgetting to square the factor is the single most common area-conversion error, and it produces answers wrong by a factor of three or more. The metric side runs square millimeters through square kilometers, with the hectare (10,000 m²) as the standard land unit worldwide. The imperial side uses square inches, square feet, square yards (9 sq ft), and acres (4,840 sq yd, or 43,560 sq ft) for land.

Land measurement is where the cultural split shows: the United States lists property in acres and houses in square feet, while most of the world uses hectares and square meters. Key bridges: one acre equals 4,046.86 m² (about 0.405 hectares), one hectare equals 2.47105 acres, and one square mile equals 640 acres or 2.59 km². A useful mental image: an acre is roughly 63 by 63 meters, about three-quarters of a soccer field; a hectare is exactly 100 by 100 meters.

Flooring, paint, and turf all sell by area, so conversion errors cost real money — ordering carpet for '500 square feet' computed with the linear factor would leave you catastrophically short. Always convert the area unit directly (sq ft to m²) rather than converting a length and re-squaring it yourself, and round material orders up: professionals add a 10 percent waste allowance on top of the converted figure, because cuts, pattern matching, and offcuts consume more than the bare floor plan suggests.

How it's calculated

Every unit converts through square meters with its exact factor: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², 1 acre = 4046.8564224 m², 1 hectare = 10,000 m². The result is value × factor[from] ÷ factor[to].

Worked examples

2,000 sq ft apartment to square meters

Multiply by 0.09290304 m² per sq ft: 2,000 x 0.09290304 = 185.806, rounded to 185.8 m². Sanity check with the linear factor squared: (0.3048)² = 0.09290304 — the same number, confirming the squaring. For listings, 185.8 m² is 'about 186 square meters.' Going the other way, a 100 m² flat is 100 / 0.09290304 = 1,076.39 sq ft, or about 1,076 sq ft — the classic European-versus-American apartment comparison.

5 acres of land to hectares

One acre is 4,046.8564224 m², so 5 acres = 20,234.28 m². A hectare is 10,000 m², so divide: 20,234.28 / 10,000 = 2.0234, or about 2.02 hectares. Equivalently, 5 x 0.404685642 = 2.0234 ha. Reverse: 2.02 ha x 2.47105 = 4.99 acres, confirming the round trip. For perspective, 2 hectares is roughly four American football fields (without end zones), a handy image when reading overseas property listings.

Frequently asked questions

How many square meters are in an acre?

4,046.86 m². Enter 1, choose acre → m² — the international acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m².

Can I convert hectares to acres?

Yes — 1 hectare is exactly 10,000 m², and 1 acre is 4,046.8564224 m², so 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres.

What is a square foot in square meters?

A square foot is the area of a 1 ft × 1 ft square (0.09290304 m²), so 100 ft² is 9.29 m² — about the size of a small bedroom.
