Hourly, monthly, annual — translate any paycheck.

Job offers come in different pay periods, which makes comparing them harder than it should be. Convert any hourly, monthly or annual figure into the other two instantly. Hourly pay is annualized on a standard 2,080-hour work year (40 hours × 52 weeks).

Introduction

Job offers quote pay in different units — hourly, weekly, monthly, annual — and comparing them requires a common denominator. The convention for full-time work is 2,080 hours a year (40 hours x 52 weeks), so $75,000 a year equals about $36.06 an hour. Monthly pay is annual divided by 12; biweekly (every two weeks, 26 paychecks) is annual divided by 26. Note that biweekly is not the same as twice-monthly (24 paychecks): biweekly workers get two 'extra' paychecks a year, which matters for budgeting — treat them as bonus savings, not spending money.

When comparing offers, convert everything to the same unit and then adjust for reality. Unpaid overtime shrinks an effective hourly rate fast: a $75,000 salary worked at 50 hours a week is really $75,000 / 2,600 = $28.85 an hour. Benefits — health insurance, retirement match, paid leave, stock — can be worth 20-30% on top of salary; a $75,000 job with great benefits can beat an $85,000 job with none. And cost-of-living differences between cities can dwarf the nominal gap entirely: a $90,000 salary in San Francisco can leave less disposable income than $65,000 in a low-cost city. Convert first, then compare total compensation, then adjust for location. Contractors should add a self-employment buffer: as a rule of thumb, divide the equivalent salary by 0.7 to 0.75 to cover self-employment tax, health insurance, unpaid time off, and business costs. A $75,000 employee role equates to roughly a $100-$107/hour... precisely, $75,000 / 0.7 = $107,143 annual target, or about $54/hour over 2,000 billable hours. If a contract offers less than the converted employee equivalent, it is a pay cut wearing a higher hourly rate as camouflage.

How it's calculated

Annual = monthly × 12 or hourly × 2,080 (40 h × 52 weeks); monthly = annual ÷ 12; hourly = annual ÷ 2,080.

Worked examples

$75,000 a year as hourly, monthly, and biweekly pay

Hourly: 75,000 / 2,080 = $36.06 per hour. Monthly: 75,000 / 12 = $6,250. Biweekly: 75,000 / 26 = $2,884.62 per paycheck. Verify: 36.06 x 2,080 = $75,004.80 — the $4.80 is rounding from truncating $36.0577 to $36.06. And 2,884.62 x 26 = $75,000.12 — consistent. Twice-monthly would be 75,000 / 24 = $3,125.00 per paycheck — larger checks, but only 24 of them.

Comparing a $40/hour offer against the $75,000 salary

$40 x 2,080 = $83,200 a year — higher than the $75,000 salary on paper. But if the hourly role offers no paid vacation, two unpaid weeks mean 2,000 working hours: $40 x 2,000 = $80,000. If it also lacks health insurance (worth perhaps $6,000-$8,000 a year) and a 401(k) match, the salaried job wins overall despite the lower headline number. The conversion is step one; total compensation is the real comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What does $25/hour equal per year?

At full time (2,080 hours/year), $25/hour is $52,000 per year or about $4,333 per month. Enter it above to see the exact conversion — before taxes, of course.

Why 2,080 hours?

It's the standard full-time benchmark: 40 hours per week × 52 weeks. If you work part-time or get unpaid leave, your real annual total will be lower — adjust accordingly.

Is this gross or net pay?

Gross — before taxes and deductions. Your take-home pay will be lower; use the income tax estimator for a rough sense of the tax bite.
