HealthYour tracker says 8,247 steps. How far did you actually walk? Converting steps to distance is simple multiplication — but the multiplier is your stride length, and that's personal. This guide shows the formula, the standard estimates, and how to measure your own stride in under a minute.

The formula
— then convert: feet ÷ 5,280 = miles · meters ÷ 1,000 = km —
Stride length is the distance from the heel of one foot to the heel of the same foot on its next landing — one full step cycle. The average adult walking stride is about 2.5 feet (0.76 m), which gives the famous rule of thumb:
— average-height adult, normal walking pace —
Worked example
You walked 8,247 steps with a measured stride of 2.4 feet:
- Total feet: 8,247 × 2.4 = 19,793 ft
- Miles: 19,793 ÷ 5,280 = 3.75 miles
- Kilometers: 19,793 ft × 0.3048 = 6,033 m = 6.0 km
Stride length by height (estimates)
| Height | Walking stride | Steps per mile |
|---|---|---|
| 5'0" (152 cm) | ~2.1 ft | ~2,500 |
| 5'4" (163 cm) | ~2.3 ft | ~2,300 |
| 5'8" (173 cm) | ~2.5 ft | ~2,100 |
| 6'0" (183 cm) | ~2.7 ft | ~1,950 |
| 6'4" (193 cm) | ~2.9 ft | ~1,820 |
These are averages — two people of the same height can differ by 10%. Speed matters too: walking briskly lengthens your stride, which is why the same step count covers more ground at a power-walking pace.
Measure your own stride in 60 seconds
- Mark a starting line and walk 30 feet (10 m) at your normal pace, counting steps.
- Divide 30 by your step count. If it took 12 steps: 30 ÷ 12 = 2.5 ft per step.
- Repeat twice and average — consistency is the whole point.
Enter that number in your fitness app's settings if it allows custom stride length; your step-based distances will instantly get more accurate.
Why trackers sometimes disagree
Most trackers estimate stride from your entered height rather than measuring it — usually within 5–10% of reality. GPS-tracked walks are more accurate but drain battery and fail indoors. Treadmill walkers get the worst estimates, since there's no real forward movement to measure against. When accuracy matters (training plans, fundraising walks), use a measured stride with the formula above.
Frequently asked questions
About 2,000 steps for the average adult walking at a normal pace — the standard approximation used by most fitness trackers. Taller people with longer strides need fewer steps (around 1,800–1,900); shorter people need more (around 2,100–2,200).
Roughly 5 miles (about 8 km) for an average-height adult. At a typical 2.5-foot stride: 10,000 × 2.5 = 25,000 feet ÷ 5,280 = 4.7 miles. Call it 4.5–5.5 miles depending on your stride.
Walk 10 normal steps, measure the total distance heel-to-heel, and divide by 10. For the most accurate result, walk 30 feet in your normal gait, count the steps, and divide 30 by the step count — that is your stride length in feet.
Trackers use your height (entered in settings) to estimate stride length rather than measuring it, so their distances are approximations — usually within 5–10%. GPS-tracked walks on your phone are more accurate than step-estimated ones.
